I have always loved waking up early. It started when I was 15 and I began swimming, which required me to wake up at 5:30 AM on training day’s. Of course I wasn’t training everyday, but I would always try to wake up at 5:30 AM on a non training day and do some sort of exercise (I just really enjoy exercising in the mornings). I wasn’t allowed to join the gym at that age, nor did I want to, so I usually performed some sort of body weight exercise along with running / sprinting up and down a hill. When I started college I was doing the same thing (well most day’s at least) I would wake up at 6:00 AM and head straight to the gym. I didn’t really have a morning routine at that point, I just knew that I wanted to wake up early and exercise, which usually resulted in me going to the gym. Of course, I couldn’t maintain this everyday, but as much as possible I tried to maintain this routine.
Over the past year or so, I really developed a morning routine that I love to follow. I built it up, bit by bit, adding what works and removing what doesn’t work. Doing this every morning (No matter what is going on in my life) keeps my happy & sane. I notice that when I don’t do it, I am not as happy / mentally clear as I normally would be. Maybe it’s just because I feel like I am unproductive when I skip something, but whatever the case I love doing my morning routine. I’ve recently started to implement an evening routine into my day. Part of the Evening routine requires me to go to bed early so I could get enough sleep. When I first read ‘Why we Sleep‘ by Matthew Walker I really began to take my sleep seriously (P.S: It’s sooooo important, just do it). Well I guess I’ll share what routine I currently follow:
- Wake up @ 6:00 AM
- Drink over 500 ml of Water
- Brush my Teeth + Think about the things I am grateful for
- Meditate for 5 – 10 Minutes
- List 3 things I am grateful for
- Read for 30 minutes
- Exercise for 60+ minutes
- Breakfast 🙂
- Stop all work @ 8:00 PM
- Put all electronics away
- Get Organized! (Food Prep / Pack gear bag / Tidy room)
- Plan the day ahead & Give myself one goal that I could focus on
- Brush my teeth / Shower
- Read for 20 – 30 minutes
- Bed by 9:30 PM
and that’s it! As boring as it sounds, it’s what I love to do. I’ve noticed that I feel much happier, calmer and mentally focused as I would otherwise. Following this routine isn’t always possible, but If I could do this 5 / 7 times per week I am happy. Doing this comes with sacrifice, but it works for me, I much rather be productive in the mornings as opposed to the evenings.
Just thought I’ll share this, I enjoy creating content, which is the main reason why I write these blog posts. Thank you for reading, and have an amazing day!
