I used to be a person who only thought only about the future, everything I did was to create a better future for myself in order to set myself for success later on in life. One day a friend asked if I want to attend a meditation class. This is something I never did, I tried doing meditation through the app ‘Headspace’ before but I found it super difficult. Since I am always open to new experiences I decided to attend this ‘meditation class’.
The class was led by a blind man, and there was about 10 people in the room, I was the only guy there. At some point during the class, the teacher asked us to meditate using the technique he just showed us, and to later reflect our thoughts back to him, once the meditation is complete.
Once the meditation was complete, he asked the class to say what we were thinking during the meditation. I was the first speak, and I blunted out something like this “I think this is really cool, and I would love to do this class again”. Those were my actual thoughts during the meditation.
Everyone laughed at my answer, and I felt quite embarrassed. The teacher criticized my answer, and gave me a two part response. Firstly he was happy that I enjoyed the class. The other thing that he mentioned, has had a great influence on my life. He said something like this: “Why am I thinking about the thing that I am doing right now, sometime in the future when I am doing it right now?”
That answer made me realize that he is `100% correct. What I was thinking didn’t make sense at all and every since that day I have consciously started to be more aware of my thoughts and live in the present moment, being completely immersed in whatever I am doing and enjoying it no matter what it may be. This realization has ultimately transformed my life for the better. I then began to read books like:
- ‘Power of Now’ – Eckhart Tolle
- ‘Waking Up – Sam Harris’
- ‘Man’s Search for Meaning’ – Viktor Frankl
- How to stop worrying and start living ‘ – Dale Carnegie.
As a result, my thinking has definitely changed for the better. Of course, my consciousness isn’t perfect all the time, I get stressed, overwhelmed, unfocused but the overall quality of mind has improved drastically.
I guess it really comes down to this: The quality of our life is really dependent on the quality of our mind. Very little is needed to make a happy life. When you think about it, we only live in the current moment, which is right now. Even when you achieve that goal you always wanted, which is in the distant future, whenever you attain that goal you will still remain in the Present moment, so maybe lets just enjoy this life that we have and live each moment with our complete and utter attention, because that’s all we ever have.
